The Ocean Shores Fire and Emergency Care Department, located at the
intersection of Point Brown Avenue N.E. and J.K. Lewis, is staffed by eight
career, eight part-time, and 24 paid-call volunteer personnel. The station is
staffed 24-hours a day by a minimum of two on-duty personnel, backed up by at
least eight paid-call personnel with 911 emergency notification. There are 12
Volunteers in Prevention who help perform business life safety inspections and
staff the office. The Department also has a large Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT) that is available to assist the City during major
emergencies.
Two fire engines, one 85-foot aerial platform, and a brush
engine provide fire protection. An automatic aid agreement with Grays Harbor
Fire District #7 provides additional assistance. Fire insurance rating for both
residential and commercial property is rated at a class 6.
Three advance
life support (ALS) ambulances and one ALS-equipped fire engine provide emergency
care. Four 24-hour career personnel are paramedic trained, and three are ALS
technicians. Most of the paid-call volunteers are emergency medical technicians
with some trained at the ALS and paramedic level.
The department has a
comprehensive Master Plan that covers all areas of operation. A copy of this
plan is available for the public to view at the Ocean Shores Library or at the
fire station. The plan calls for the Department to reach 85% of emergency class
for service in five minutes or less. Because of the city's unique layout of
lakes and inter-connecting waterways this cannot be accomplished from one
station. The City has acquired land on Marine View Drive near Texmar to
construct a second station in the near future.
The Department hold
training almost every Thursday night between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. in the summer
and 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. the rest of the year. Training includes fire fighting
skills, emergency medical procedure, safety, and a variety of other subjects.
Visitors are welcome to attend training sections; please call the station prior
to attending.
The Department conducts emergency first aid and
Cardioplumonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for the community at least
quarterly throughout the year. Special classes can be arranged for groups of ten
or more. In addition, Department personnel coordinate CERT training several time
throughout the year. CERT training includes home preparation and safety, as well
as helping your neighborhood and community during a large emergency
situation.
The department is always in need of a few good volunteers to
help accomplish its mission to protect human life and save property. If you are
interested in being a part of this vital link to your community call the
Department today.
